USS Monitor bow with divers.

A "Deck Light" in the crews quarters. A deck light is a port hole mounted in the ceiling. It allowed both light in and air when open.

View from aft towards bow.  Armor belt is on the right side.
Far left close is the "H" beam.  This is what the turret rested on.

Overview of area of deck light. The space below it was a crew cabin. The cielings in the Monitor were approximately 9 feet high.

On the 2006 Expedition we located an artifact pod that had become exposed by the currents. These items are a testing device that are used to check water salinity and temperature.  We did not recover them but left them in place. (photo right)  Returning to the same artifact pod this year shows that they are becoming buried again with sand that is being pushed over by the water currents.

Looking aft at the inside of the armor belt.  Lower left is meter-grid for photographing artifacts.  Off on the middle left is the armor belt section that was removed in 2002 to gain access to the turret. That section is 40 feet long and is about 80 feet away from the main wreck site.

Paul Kim swimming aft along the armor belt.  This section remaining is approximately 110 feet long. Each linear foot of the belt weighs approximately 1,000 pounds.
